Calcium is a mineral that is an essential constituent of our bones and teeth which give strength and structure to the body. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium is found in bones and teeth to keep them strong. The remaining one percent is in the blood. Calcium also plays important roles in nerve conduction, muscle contraction and blood clotting.
Proper Calcium metabolism is very vital for growing children and pregnant and lactating females. Reduced calcium levels are common in women of the postmenopausal age group which causes osteoporosis and fragility fracture whereas infants develop Rickets in face of calcium deficiency
Calcium in the bones can be used as a reserve by the body when calcium level in the blood drops below a normal level. Hence sufficient dietary intake of calcium should be maintained through food rich in calcium like:
Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt
Leafy, green vegetables
Calcium enriched foods like orange juice, soy milk
Fish with soft bone like salmon.
Calcium requirement:In children: 400-600 mg/day
In adults: 500-1000 mg/day
In pregnant and lactating mothers: 1200-1500 mg/day
Many times inspite of taking enough calcium, it is not absorbed by the system. Body needs a supplement which corrects the absorption of calcium by the system.
